Using the Sun to Backlight

Using The Sun to Backlight

Most of the time when I am using the sun to backlight, I try to put the sun behind me when I shoot my models/subject, so that they will be lit. For this shoot with Auneetuh (check out her blog!) I have the sun behind her and I shot into the sun, which created a beautiful rim light effect. Shooting into the sun can sometimes create a lens flare and also darken your subject. You can incorporate Flash, a reflector, or a strobe to add more of a dramatic effect. Just remember you’re not trying to override the sun!

I’m using the Canon speed light set to Auto, and Canon 60d set to Manual. You don’t have to use the same lights or camera I’m using, you can use whatever equipment you have. When I was just starting out as a photographer,  the only thing that I had was my camera and a reflector, and I used that to my advantage.
